Afolayan made the comments during the launch of EKO57, a campaign group formed to mobilise support for Tinubu’s potential second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general election.

The event featured several Nollywood figures, including Yomi Fash-Lanso, Remi Surutu and Lege Miami.

At the gathering, Afolayan endorsed Tinubu’s re-election and appeared to downplay concerns about the rising cost of living and insecurity, stating that reports of insurgency should not be taken seriously.

The remarks quickly triggered sharp criticism online, with some Nigerians accusing him of being financially motivated.

In a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, Afolayan expressed regret, acknowledging the intense backlash and admitting that his words had caused offence.

He insisted that his comments had been misunderstood and clarified that he did not intend to dismiss the country’s security challenges.

The actor said his intention was to criticise narratives that downplay insecurity, stressing that the issue remains widespread across Nigeria.

He cited a personal experience involving the kidnapping of a close associate’s relative as evidence of the severity of the situation.

Afolayan also addressed allegations that he had been paid to speak at the event, noting that conflicting narratives had emerged online.

He said the controversy had weighed heavily on him and apologised to Nigerians who felt hurt by his remarks.

In a significant development, he announced his withdrawal from partisan political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that the backlash had prompted reflection.

He added that his participation at the event was driven by an interest in grassroots engagement rather than broader political endorsement.
