Speaking in a recent interview with Afropolitan, the 39-year-old creative revealed how streaming platform Netflix rejected her proposal to expand her hit TV series, ‘The Smart Money Woman’.

Ugwu, whose series enjoyed widespread acclaim and ranked in Netflix’s top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks, had approached the streaming giant to sponsor a bigger and better second season. Despite the show’s success on both Africa Magic and Netflix, her proposal was turned down.

“We were able to produce Season 1 of ‘The Smart Money Woman’ and got a fantastic reception on Africa Magic and Netflix. We were in the top 10 for 13 weeks on Netflix.

I then approached Netflix for sponsorship to make the project bigger and better, and shockingly, they turned me down. That rejection almost broke me,” Ugwu shared.

Despite the disappointment, Ugwu remains resolute in her ambition to carve out a full-fledged identity as a filmmaker, beyond the success of her bestselling book.

“I want to establish myself as a filmmaker. I feel like some people still see me as the girl who wrote a book and the book was turned into a TV series,” she said.

Arese Ugwu’s experience highlights the uphill battle many African creatives face when scaling local success into global partnerships. Yet, her resilience and clarity of vision continue to inspire a new wave of storytellers across the continent.
