Seun Oloketuyi is producing ‘Baba Kekere’, a biopic on Lateef Jakande, while training 100 youths to tell Nigerian stories through film

After chronicling the lives of political and traditional icons, Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best Of Nollywood (BON) Awards, is set to produce a biopic on Lagos’ first civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, entitled ‘Baba Kekere’.

Lateef Jakande (1929–2021), known as the “junior version” of his mentor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is celebrated as the architect of modern Lagos.

During his tenure from 1979 to 1983, he built over 30,000 low-cost housing units, established Lagos State University (LASU), and implemented free education programs that shaped Nigeria’s professional workforce.

Oloketuyi explained that his motivation is both patriotic and educational.

“Our young people do not have a sense of history,” he said.

“After every biopic we do, people call me to confirm some of the things they saw in the film. Our history is being eroded because we are not documenting it. It is time to start doing that.”

The filmmaker’s repertoire already includes biopics such as ‘Last Man Standing’ on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Lagos years, ‘Yahaya the White Lion’ on former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, and stories of Chief Michael Koleosho in Babalaje.

Upcoming releases include films on Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the late Awujale of Ijebuland, and Lamidi Adedibu, the ‘Strongman of Ibadan Politics’.

In addition to preserving history on film, Oloketuyi is investing in the next generation of storytellers.

Through a partnership with Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, led by Executive Chairman Hon. Seyi Lawal Jakande, son of Lateef Jakande, he is launching a Nollywood Talent Development Training program.

The initiative aims to train 100 local youths in technical filmmaking skills, ensuring Nigerian stories are documented by Nigerians.

Applications for the program close on March 5th, creating a narrow but vital window for aspiring filmmakers and actors in the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA.

As Oloketuyi prepares to bring ‘Baba Kekere’ to the screen, the project is more than a film; it is a bridge between historical legacy and future creative potential.
