Naira Marley Mohbad death inquest

Naira Marley testifies before a Coroner’s court regarding Mohbad’s death, denying any involvement and washing his hands off all allegations

Nigerian singer, Naira Marley, has given his testimony before a Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu, in the ongoing Coroner’s inquest seeking to uncover the cause of the tragic death of his former artist, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad.

The inquest, which has garnered widespread attention, aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s untimely passing.

Appearing virtually on Friday, Naira Marley provided his account to Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, detailing his professional relationship with the late Mohbad.

The singer explained that he had signed Mohbad to his record label, Marlian Records, with the intention of producing four albums. However, due to frequent disagreements between Mohbad and his manager, Opere Babatunde, none of these albums were completed before Mohbad’s departure from the label.

Marley denied the allegations of abuse or molestation that have been circulating, particularly claims made by the late Mohbad in a viral video. In the video, Mohbad had accused Marley and the Marlian crew, suggesting they should be held responsible if anything were to happen to him.

Marley, however, refuted these accusations, pointing to a police report that cleared him of any wrongdoing. He further explained that Mohbad had later apologized for the video, attributing it to the artist being under the influence of drugs at the time.

When questioned about any potential disputes between him and Mohbad, Naira Marley denied there were any issues, asserting that the last time he saw the late artist was a year prior to his death, and he was not even in the country at the time of Mohbad’s passing. Marley also emphasized that he had no role in Mohbad’s death.

However, the testimony was contested by Oluwasanmi Falade, the late Mohbad’s lawyer, who disagreed with Marley’s version of events. Falade confirmed to the court that there was indeed a dispute between Mohbad and Marlian Records, particularly regarding unpaid royalties.

He revealed that Mohbad had sent several letters to the label, but received no response. The matter, he confirmed, had since been taken up in litigation before the Federal High Court.

Additionally, Falade testified that Mohbad had been attacked at Lekki Beach by music promoter Sam Larry, and under his legal counsel, Mohbad had reported the incident at the Force Headquarters. Despite the report, attempts to arrest Sam Larry had proven unsuccessful.

After hearing both testimonies, Magistrate Shotobi instructed Sam Larry to appear before the court for further questioning on the next adjourned date.

The Coroner also directed that the address of Mohbad’s driver be confirmed so that witness summons could be sent to him as well. Additionally, the pathologist who conducted an independent autopsy on Mohbad was ordered to submit their findings to the court and the Chief Coroner before the next hearing.

The Coroner’s court is set to reconvene on April 11, where Sam Larry is expected to testify. The proceedings continue to raise important questions about the circumstances surrounding the death of Mohbad, and the investigation remains ongoing.
