R&B star Tems discusses her rise to fame in Nigeria, revealing that her celebrity status has made it difficult to move freely without police escorts.

 

 

Nigerian R&B sensation Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, recently shared insights into the challenges she faces as one of Nigeria’s most recognised celebrities.

During an interview on the American podcast Big Boy TV, the artist revealed how her soaring popularity has drastically changed her everyday life, especially in her home country.

Tems, who has gained international acclaim, admitted that her fame sometimes makes even simple activities in Nigeria, such as driving, a challenging task.

“I used to drive in Nigeria, but now I can’t drive,” she explained. “I almost got mobbed last December. If I want to drive, I must have police escorts at the front and the back.”

The musician elaborated on an incident where she was nearly mobbed while driving through Lagos, highlighting how her fame can make public appearances complicated and, at times, risky.

Fame hasn’t been an easy adjustment for the talented singer, who identifies as an introvert. She acknowledged that dealing with the constant public attention and adoration took time, but she has since learned to adapt to her celebrity status. This adjustment, she admitted, was difficult initially but essential for her career and peace of mind.

Tems’ revelations highlight the complexities that come with fame in Nigeria, where privacy can be a luxury for high-profile figures.
