Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1951, Hussey’s breakthrough role came at just 15 years old, opposite Leonard Whiting, in the Oscar-winning film.

Her exceptional performance earned her a Golden Globe for “New Star of the Year” and cemented her place in cinematic history.

Following Romeo and Juliet, Hussey continued to build a diverse career in both film and television, starring in a number of iconic projects.

These included the 1974 slasher Black Christmas and the 1978 film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile.

In 2023, Hussey and Whiting made headlines by filing a lawsuit against the studio behind Romeo and Juliet, claiming child abuse over a controversial nude scene in the film.

Though the lawsuit was dismissed, Hussey had previously defended the scene in a 2018 interview, emphasising that she and Whiting were fully aware of their work as trained actors at the time.

Hussey was born to an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary and moved to London at the age of seven.

After training at the esteemed Italia Conti drama school, she began acting as a teenager, ultimately landing her defining role in Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet.

She is survived by her husband, musician David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild. Hussey’s enduring legacy in the entertainment world is marked not only by her iconic performances but also by her kind and generous spirit.
