Nollywood actress says the late comic actor’s family dispute reflects the long-term challenges associated with polygamous homes

Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has weighed in on the ongoing family dispute involving the late comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, describing the situation as a painful example of the challenges that can arise in polygamous families.

Sharing her views in a lengthy post on Instagram, Rita Edochie criticised polygamy, arguing that the public disagreements surrounding the late actor’s family should serve as a lesson for others considering similar family structures.

The actress said the late Mr Ibu “did not do well” in his family decisions, maintaining that no cultural justification could erase what she described as the damaging effects of polygamy on family unity and long-term peace.

“Late Mr Ibu did not do well at all. No matter how we try to sugarcoat polygamy or paint it as a cultural success story, it still does not change the fact that it has been one of the greatest marital errors that has jeopardised the peace, unity and harmony of countless families,” Rita Edochie wrote.

According to the actress, the disagreements reportedly involving members of Mr Ibu’s family over property and related issues highlight recurring problems often associated with polygamous homes, including rivalry, jealousy, divided loyalties and inheritance disputes.

She argued that while every family has unique circumstances, the current situation should encourage deeper reflection about the long-term consequences of polygamy.

“The situation currently playing out in Mr Ibu’s family has become another painful reminder of how difficult such family structures can become,” she added.

Rita Edochie further stated that marriage should be built on love, commitment, trust and mutual understanding, noting that sustaining peace in a monogamous relationship is already challenging without introducing additional spouses.

The comments come months after the death of Mr Ibu, one of Nollywood’s most celebrated comic actors, whose passing prompted tributes from across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

In the period since his death, public attention has increasingly shifted to reported disagreements among some members of his family over estate-related matters.
