Showmax closure move sees content integrated into DStv Stream, preserving originals after the platform shuts down in April 2026
Media conglomerate MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, has announced that its streaming service Showmax will wind down operations, with its content transitioning into the DStv Stream platform as part of a broader consolidation of its digital entertainment offerings.
According to the company, Showmax titles will remain accessible to audiences from 1 April 2026 through a dedicated section within DStv Stream, ensuring continuity for viewers following the closure of the standalone service on 30 April 2026.
The transition is designed to preserve a curated library of acclaimed originals and fan favourite programmes.
The Showmax closure move forms part of MultiChoice’s evolving strategy to unify on demand entertainment and live television within a single platform.
The company stated that DStv Stream will host both streaming content and live broadcasts, including sports, providing a comprehensive viewing experience for subscribers.
MultiChoice confirmed that Showmax content will be available across multiple subscription tiers, including Compact, Compact Plus and Premium packages.
The service will also remain accessible to streaming only users through the DStv Stream application, expanding availability across both satellite and digital audiences.
In a statement, the company explained that Showmax Originals and selected titles would be grouped within a dedicated Showmax section on DStv Stream.
This structure is intended to maintain the identity of the brand’s most recognised productions while integrating them into a broader entertainment ecosystem.
Existing Showmax subscribers are set to be migrated automatically to DStv Stream on the Compact package.
These users will continue to access content at no additional cost until 31 May 2026, providing a transitional period as the platform phases out.
Kemi Omotosho, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, described the move as a reflection of the company’s long term commitment to streaming and audience driven viewing habits.
She noted that consolidating services into a single platform aligns with how modern viewers consume content across multiple formats.
Omotosho also highlighted the role Showmax played in elevating African storytelling, citing productions such as WURA, Flawsome, Cheta M and The Real Housewives of Lagos.
These titles, developed through collaboration with local producers, contributed to establishing Showmax as a notable platform for original African content.
She emphasised that the company’s commitment to supporting African narratives remains unchanged, describing the transition as a continuation rather than a departure from its content strategy.
The integration into DStv Stream is expected to maintain visibility for these productions while positioning them within a more unified digital service.
Industry watchers view the Showmax closure move as a significant development in Africa’s streaming landscape, reflecting a growing trend toward platform consolidation and bundled content delivery.
The success of the transition may ultimately depend on user adoption and how effectively DStv Stream retains Showmax’s established audience base.
As the April 2026 closure date approaches, attention will remain on how seamlessly the migration is executed and whether the integrated platform can sustain the momentum built by Showmax over the years.
The shift marks a notable moment in the evolution of streaming services across the continent, with implications for both consumers and content creators.
