#AMVCA10: Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ misses out

Published

on

Reactions have continued to trail the 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA, which was held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, on Saturday.

Funke Akindele’s record-breaking film, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ snub has emerged as the biggest talking point from the event.

‘Breath Of Life’ was the biggest winner of the night, snagging six awards, including Best Movie, Best Sound Design, Best Director (BB Sasore), Best Lead Actor (Wale Ojo), Best Supporting Actor (Ademola Adedoyin), Best Supporting Actress (Genoveva Umeh), and Trailblazer (Chimezie Imo).

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ on the other hand, lost all five nominations despite becoming the first Nigerian movie to gross over N1 billion in cinema last December.

The billion-naira record, previously held by Hollywood’s “Black Panther 2” at N1.04 billion, marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian film industry.

A Tribe Called Judah follows five brothers: Jide Kene Achufusi as Emeka Judah, Timini Egbuson as Pere Judah, Uzee Usman as Adamu Judah, Tobi Makinde as Shina Judah, and Olumide Oworu as Ejiro Judah, who must come together to rob a company to save their mother, played by Akindele as Jedidah Judah.

As expected, the snub of Nigeria’s highest-grossing film has sparked a social media firestorm.

Here is some of the reactions on X:

A Tribe Called Judah didn’t win any award.

Anyway, Kehinde had a better performance than Funke if we compare both movies. But how Breath of Life won best movie over ATCJ is shocking 😅😅

A tribe called Judah by Funke Akindele gave us what we have always known in a different way but Breath of life’s storyline was awesome.. it’s a well deserved win for Breath of life and that doesn’t mean that Funke Akindele isn’t a winner.. she is now and always #AMVCA10 pic.twitter.com/xujmwAPYEk

Funke Akindele was robbed, ATCJ was intentionally ignored, yen yen yen. Tell me one award Breath of Life won tonight that should have been a tribe called Judah? Oya pic.twitter.com/tddSCdAoKt

— IFEOLUWANI (@iam_philopearl) May 11, 2024

I have seen these two movies.

Even though A tribe called Judah received lots of accolades and gathered over N1billion, Breath of Life is a better movie and deserves the award.

What moral does Breath of Life Teach?

Breath of life is a very interesting movie but not as A Tribe called Judah.

In terms of suspense, emotional lines, comedy, production and execution. But what exactly was their rating point to have picked Breath of life over Judah (a movie that hits billions of view). pic.twitter.com/u2Bon7rwbt

I’m not even that mad that A Tribe Called Judah was snubbed in all categories. I’m livid because not once did they mention the 1B milestone.. It’s obvious that #AMVCA10 no longer fuck with Funke Akindele. pic.twitter.com/odukvnF7x8

— olawale (@EngOguns) May 11, 2024

In what world are you people thinking a tribe called Judah deserves movie of the year? Blood vessel is 10X better than a tribe called Judah. There is nothing special about the movie. It was just a good movie but Breath of life is miles ahead.. way ahead in everything. https://t.co/cfiLhra5VY

I don’t want to hear anything like Funke Akindele was robbed oo, when she bagged all the awards with “Omo ghetto the saga” nobody remembered Robbery oo, so please let Breath of life BREATHE!!!!! pic.twitter.com/kpztCimwI9

Thank you, the hypocrisy was smelling. In January, we were all praising her on this app but suddenly the movie is overhyped. I don’t like two faced people. Both movies were good, two truths can co-exist.

I told my wife early this year that Funke Akindele’s “A Tribe of Judah” may have grossed the highest earnings of a movie in Nigeria, “Breath of Life” was a better movie by a mile.

Breath of life was shoulders ahead of any movie in Nigeria in 2023.
I was so glad I watched it.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde denies fleeing LA wildfires

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde clarifies viral reports claiming she fled Los Angeles due to wildfires, confirming she has been in Nigeria since December 2024

Famous Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has addressed viral reports suggesting she fled Los Angeles to Nigeria to escape the ongoing wildfires.

In a statement posted on her Instagram, Omotola clarified that the reports were inaccurate.

The actress had shared on January 9, 2025, that she had arrived in Nigeria, stating:
“Touchdown Abuja. When my American fans follow me back to Nigeria. I had to evacuate in 20 minutes. Please, guys, stay safe out there. If you have family in LA, check on them.”

This post led to widespread speculation that Omotola had been forced to leave LA due to the devastating wildfires ravaging California.

The fires, which have displaced over 137,000 people and claimed more than 30 lives, including Hollywood actress Dalyce Curry, have had a significant impact on many.

However, Omotola swiftly dispelled these claims in a statement shared on Instagram. She reassured her followers:
“I want to take a moment to address the incredible outpouring of concern and support I have received regarding the fires in Los Angeles. To set the record straight: My family and I are safe.

However, I have seen reports suggesting that I had to leave the U.S. because of the fire. This is inaccurate. I have been in Nigeria since December 2024, and I’m still here presently. While I deeply cherish my connection to LA, these fires were not the reason for my travel.”

The wildfires have affected numerous A-list celebrities, including actors, singers, and other public figures, adding to the widespread concern over the crisis.

Omotola’s clarification serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information, especially in the age of social media, where viral reports can often distort the truth.
