Elegbeje Ado burial plans have prompted his daughter to seek support as the late 66-year-old Yoruba actor’s family prepares to lay him to rest

The daughter of late Yoruba Nollywood veteran Taiwo Adeshina, popularly known as Elegbeje Ado, is seeking financial support for her father’s burial in Nigeria as the family prepares to lay the 66-year-old actor to rest on August 20 and 21, 2026.

The appeal was made public on Wednesday, August 19, after actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod visited the family and shared a video of the meeting online.

In the video, Adeshina’s daughter appealed for assistance, explaining that the family needed support to give the respected actor a befitting farewell.

Afod responded with a N200,000 cash donation and encouraged members of the public and colleagues in the entertainment industry to support the family.

The appeal comes less than two months after Adeshina died on June 29, 2026, following a brief illness.

His death was announced by colleagues including Afod and Seun Oloketuyi, who described him as an important figure in Yoruba cinema.

Afod paid tribute to the late actor at the time, describing him as one of the legends of the Yoruba film industry and praising his contribution to the development of indigenous cinema.

“We regret to announce the passing of one of the legends of the Yoruba Nollywood industry, Baba Elegbeje Ado,” Afod wrote in his tribute.

Adeshina built a career spanning more than two decades and became widely recognised for portraying traditional rulers, chiefs, elders and other culturally significant characters in Yoruba-language productions. His stage name, Elegbeje Ado, became closely associated with his screen career.

Several reports have also identified films including Ageku Abela, Oko Abiku and Kadara Mi among the productions associated with his career.

Beyond acting, Adeshina was a Christian minister. Reports indicate that he later devoted more attention to Christian ministry and faith-based filmmaking, marking a significant shift from his earlier mainstream screen career.

His death prompted tributes from colleagues and admirers who remembered his distinctive performances and contribution to the preservation of Yoruba cultural storytelling through film.

The latest appeal places the family’s immediate focus on the practical realities of organising the funeral, while Afod’s intervention has offered an early gesture of support.
